HOUSE OF THE FUTURE COMPETITION RETURNS FOR ITS SECOND EDITION

As a global leader in organizing architecture competitions, Buildner’s mission is to challenge traditional design norms and inspire new approaches to shaping the built environment. The House of the Future competition is part of the organization‘s broader effort to engage architects with real-world challenges, creating spaces that respond to the unique needs of different regions in the UAE.

This marks the second edition of the global competition, following the success of the inaugural edition in 2023, which attracted participants from 127 countries. With global issues such as climate change, urbanization, and resource scarcity in mind, the competition calls for designs that integrate cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices. The goal is to create homes that can adapt to evolving environmental and social conditions, ensuring long-term livability.

ADDRESSING CLIMATE and CULTURAL Factors IN HOUSING DEVELOPMENT

For the 2024/25 edition, participants are tasked with designing a home for a family of 4 to 6 Emirati nationals. The competition calls for a creative yet practical approach, where architects must consider the cultural, functional, and environmental factors specific to the region. Architectural design in the UAE presents a unique set of challenges, particularly due to its extreme climate. With consistently high temperatures throughout the year, designs must prioritize strategies that mitigate heat and enhance energy efficiency. This includes the careful selection of heat-reflective building materials, alongside well-thoughtout design features such as shaded areas and ventilation systems to manage the intense climate.

The jury is seeking bold, forward-thinking designs that challenge conventional residential architecture, pushing the boundaries of construction methods while respecting the region’s traditions. With registration open until April 30, 2025, this competition is a call for visionaries to set new benchmarks for housing development in the UAE and beyond.
