Another Smith restaurant reflects Thai-Chinese heritage

Another Smith is the second-generation restaurant of Kapoor Pla Rim Moei, a well-established eatery in Tak province, Thailand. The design draws inspiration from the original restaurant’s culinary identity while integrating new spatial and material considerations. The name ‘Another Smith’ originates from the owner’s surname, Smithikorn, reflecting Thai-Chinese heritage and the influence of Thai-Chinese cuisine. The logo design references traditional Chinese family seals, with red as the primary color, symbolizing prosperity, and blue, inspired by fish scales, representing the restaurant’s connection to fish-based recipes.

To align the design with the local context, restaurant design consultancy TasteSpace collaborated with Thor Kaichon, a studio specializing in bamboo architecture. The structure primarily utilizes natural materials, incorporating a bamboo framework and detailing. The site, developed on an empty plot, was planned with an integrated approach, considering functionality, circulation, and spatial organization from the master plan stage.

The restaurant consists of three main zones: a jewelry store, a coffee shop, and a dining area. The jewelry store, along with an office and private dining rooms, is located on the left side of the layout. The coffee shop is positioned on the right side, operating in the morning before transitioning into the main dining area later in the day. The main restaurant is situated next to the coffee shop, with a centrally located kitchen at the rear to facilitate efficient service.

Bamboo elements define the aesthetic of the space, with a technique developed for dyeing bamboo blue to integrate it into both structural and interior components. The coffee shop features a blue-dyed bamboo ceiling, while the facade combines natural and blue-dyed bamboo arranged in a fish-scale pattern. A laser-cut ‘SM’ logo on the wall behind the coffee bar acts as a visual anchor, and the bar counter is designed with diagonal blue tiles to reinforce the fish scale motif. Another Smith’s design by restaurant design consultancy TasteSpace establishes a distinct visual and material identity, emphasizing the use of local craftsmanship, natural materials, and a layout that supports functional efficiency and adaptability.
